Dear Author – a website for book reviews, thoughtful commentaries, and more

Dear Author is one of the best sites out there for book reviews and news (romance, fantasy, and historical fiction are their main focus), but they also write thoughtful essays about ethical issues in the publishing industry.

Issues such as plagiarism in the writing community have been discussed at length. One of the six reviewers felt so strongly about the plagiarism problem that less than a month ago she spoke at the Romance Writers of America national convention about it.

Also, writers can participate in “First Pages Saturday” where they can anonymously submit a first page for critique to the Dear Author community of readers, authors, and industry members.

For published authors, you may want to consider trying to see if they want to do an interview of you for their “My First Sale” feature. Obviously, the six reviewers also read and review books submitted to them.

I’ve found their reviews in-depth and fair (however, guest reviewers have on occasion not been as professional as the core six). There is no grade inflation, unlike some other reviewers. If you write a “C” book (i.e. average), you’ll get a “C”. A “C” from them is quite good, for they save “B” and “A” for the truly exceptional.
